“Books are our best bet to overcome
the silly stereotypes of Sicilians by the mass media.
We need to educate people about the true nature of the Sicilian people
and of their contributions to western civilization.”
This is only a small sampling of the many books about Sicily and our heritage. Some of these books, and many others, can be found on Amazon, Legas (www.arbasicula.com), Libraries (use www.worldcat.org and to find a library with the book). Some are out of print (try ebay and Google).
* WHAT IS “ARBA SICULA"?
ARBA SICULA (trans Sicilian Dawn), a non-profit international organization, promotes the language and culture of Sicily. Members receive a unique Sicilian/English biannual journal (Sicilian Dawn) that focuses on the literature, art, history, cuisine and folklore of Sicily, and SICILIA PARRA, a 20-page biannual newsletter, written primarily in English with one or two pages devoted to Sicilian. LEGAS, is their publishing arm that promotes books about Sicily and Sicilians in English and Sicilian, with a 13 page book list (some listed on this bibliography); these can be purchased by all. Their web site states, “Books are our best bet to overcome the silly stereotypes of Sicilians produced by the mass media. We need to educate people about the true nature of the Sicilian people and of their contributions to western civilization.” They also have an annual organized tour of the Island for their members. www.arbasicula.com
