Scholarship Fund 2023

Our second annual scholarship fund was created with the proceeds from the recent sale of our PIA Calendar 2023, along with the donations

of generous PIA members.

Please print the PDF link (listed below), fill out the application and mail in all requested items by DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MARCH 31, 2023!!

PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

  • To connect with others through awareness about our shared cultural heritage

 

  • To motivate the younger generation to understand their family’s journey from Poggioreale to America

 

  • To foster a sense of cultural identity by connecting students to their family roots in Sicily and how it affects who they are today

 

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • High school senior accepted and/or enrolled in a US accredited institution of higher education (college/university/technical/vocational school) on a full-time basis for the Fall 2023 semester (proof of acceptance). OR a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student with at least one full year left. Current college student must have at least 12 units. 

  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4-point scale (or the equivalent) Students enrolled in pass/fail grading system may have additional requirements.

  • United States Citizen or permanent resident alien, and show descendancy from an immigrant of Poggioreale within six generations.

  • Student must register as a member of PIA Junior, and have a parent, grandparent or legal guardian with a PIA membership. Please subscribe to the mailing list on the homepage (at the bottom) of www.poggiorealeinamerica.com to become a member (adults). 

 

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Complete and sign application form (PRINT PDF below). Submit Unofficial High School Transcripts through first semester of Senior year (if graduating senior) or Fall 2022 semester (if in college). 

  • Submit one 350-750 word essay written by the applicant based on a question related to our shared cultural heritage. Essay questions provided on application link..

  • Submit two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and another from an adult leader who knows student through an extracurricular activity, sport, volunteer service, job or religious affiliation, etc.

  • Submit Family Tree of student to verify Poggioreale ancestry (computer generated or hand drawn outline acceptable). 

  • Mail completed application, unofficial transcripts, essay, two letters of recommendation and family tree outline to PIA Scholarship Committee, c/o Sarah Campise Hallier. 180 W. Indianapolis Avenue, Fresno CA 93705.  Application packet must be received by NEW DEADLINE OF MARCH 31, 2023. Application may be emailed to sarahhallier@yahoo.com as ONE (1) PDF. Please do NOT send multiple attachments other than the ONE PDF. 

 

SCHOLARSHIP SPECIFICS AND FUNDS ALLOCATION

  • Five (5) United States student scholarships will be awarded in June 2023.
